Today's Ceramic Arts Daily Feature

| August 6, 2008 by Paul Lewing| Read Comments (2) China painting is
a form of ceramics decorating that really opens up the world of clay
for those who are interested in painterly surfaces because it is more
similar to painting than any other ceramic decorating technique. It's
no surprise, then, that many china painters have backgrounds in oil
painting or water colors.
Enamels are a close relative to china paints in that they are also an overglaze decorating technique, but they have more body and leave a raised design. Today, Paul Lewing, author of China Paint and Overglaze,
profiles raised enamel expert Johanna De Maine and explains her raised
enamel technique. Perhaps it will help open new pottery decorating
doors for you! Read More

  | August 4, 2008 Today, North Carolina potter Judith Duff demonstrates how to make a
sake set that is thrown on the wheel and altered using several
different tools and techniques. If you have never tried making sake
sets, give them a shot. Then you can impress your friends by serving
sake using the proper serving implements! Read Comments (0) | Read More Read more about these related topics: Wheel Throwing Functional Pottery Ceramics Decorating | | | August 1, 2008 I had the good fortune to be one of Matt Long’s students when he was
in graduate school at Ohio University. Sadly, I only had one class with
him because I happened to take it the quarter I graduated. But, that
one class had an impact on me. I really identified with Matt's philosophy on making pots and
that is probably why clay has been a big part of my life ever since
(ceramics was not my major, although it would have been had I taken the
class earlier!). Matt is one of those gifted educators who really
impacts his students both because he is an excellent instructor and
because of his genuine enthusiasm for what he does.
Today’s video is an excerpt from Matt Long: Vessels for Victory, a
full-length instructional DVD (available in the Ceramic Arts Daily Bookstore). This clip gives you an idea of Matt’s teaching style and a
glimpse into why he has chosen the noble (though not necessarily
lucrative) profession of making pots. It also shows you how to make
some sweet little mugs! –Jennifer Harnetty, editor.

the August 2008 Month in Clay feature. Summer will be over before we
know it so make sure you get out there and see some clay! As usual
we've gathered a smattering of exhibitions and events below from
various places around the globe to give you a snapshot of what's
happening out there. Even if you can't visit the exhibitions, you can
see the exciting creations potters and ceramic artists are coming up
with from British Columbia, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to all the way
down under in New South Wales, Australia! Read Comments (0) | Read More Read more about these related topics: Ceramic Sculpture Functional Pottery Ceramic Artists | | | July 28, 2008 Wow! The first time I saw photos of Jeffrey Nichols’ work (and pretty
much every subsequent time), I couldn’t help but say wow. I’d suspect
it is a fairly typical reaction to the vibrant (and vibrant is a bit of
an understatement) surfaces of his vessels. I still haven't even seen
Jeffrey's work in person, but I am guessing that reaction would be an
all-caps WOW! Of course, after the wows are out of the way, the next
thought that comes to mind is “how does he do that?” Well, today,
Jeffrey kindly shares his technique with us. And to that I say woohoo! Read Comments (2) | Read More Read more about these related topics: Firing Techniques Glazing Techniques & Glaze Recipes Ceramics Decorating | |
