Video Tip of the Week: Applying Decals to Glazed Pottery and Ceramics

by Justin Rothshank | Read Comments (12)

I thought a video demonstration of applying decals would be a nice follow up to Wednesday’s feature on decal paper. So in today’s Video Tip of the Week, Justin Rothshank demonstrates this process. Justin also explains how easy it is to make custom decals with a laser printer, which opens up all kinds of creative possibilities. Watch the video and then try it for yourself!  –Jennifer Harnetty, editor.

In addition to being one of Ceramics Monthly's 2007 Emerging Artists, Justin Rothshank is associate director, ceramics manager and one of the founders of the Union Project (UP), a community arts organization in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Union Project was formed in 2001 and was conceived as avideoapplydecals_supp2.jpg neighborhood space in which to meet for fellowship, creativity, community, worship, learning and more. Its long-term mission: to restore and reuse the former Union Baptist Church in order to provide sustainable gathering and working space for artists, community builders and people of faith.

When Justin and the other Union Project founders embarked on this project, they decided to team up with Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School of Public Policy and conduct a comprehensive research project on cooperative models around the country, the results of which would be made available to others interested in setting up cooperative ceramics studios and organizations. Justin and Brad Stevenson wrote about this experience in an article originally published in the January 2007 issue of Ceramics Monthly. See "The Union Project" in the Ceramics Monthly Archive Vault to read this article.

Hello readers! I have posted a link to Justin's PMI article above, which should help answer a lot of your questions. - Jennifer Harnetty, editor.

I also tried to make laser printer decals on a canon laser printer but they just burnt out and left no image. I fired at 800 degres celcius.I was told there wa not enough iron in the toner. What do you think? What other laser printers do you know of that can be used succesfuly? thank you Monique

Most of the answers to all of your questions can be found in an article I wrote that was published in the March/April 2008 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated, titled Breaking the Rules with Decals. You can find it on the PMI website, and also a PDF of it can be downloaded from my website, rothshank.com. Feel free to email me with other questions.

As others have commented the video was great. Thanks. But, as others have commented I'd like to know about the original glaze firing temperature and the decal firing temperature..or any other information for firing these laser decals.

Sharon | July 26, 2008 10:43 am

Same questions--What type of paper, what temperature and how long and are the finished products food safe? Sharon

Stephanie | July 26, 2008 6:54 am

Thanks for the demo - but I was wondering if you can talk about the firing aspect. I have tried decals before but had no success - the image just melted with no visable image - the firing was at .06 which was the instructions from another artical I came across.

what type of decal are you using? When I use Lazertran, I put it on upside down and I noticed you do it right side up. When we fire ours, I usually use porcelain for the piece then fire the decal at cone 05. If you fire too high you will lose the decal and too low it will rub off. They will always be sepia colored because you are seeing the iron in the toner. You have to have toner with enough iron to work. Color lasers will not work.

Great to see how to apply the decal, but what was it applied onto, bisque, green, already glaze fired?

Brenda | July 25, 2008 3:37 pm

I have the same questions that have already been asked. Is the response shown to everyone or just the sender. Thanks so much for the video. I have the decal paper, but do not know how to fire it on the piece. Brenda

I have a question, also: Have you ever sprayed clear glaze over the decals to make the pots food-safe and usable? (I am thinking of the platter) Are the pots dishwasher safe?

Katy | July 25, 2008 11:31 am

Really enjoyed the decal video. Two questions: How long is it fired/what temp? And, do color decals work too? I see these are all black & white. Thanks!
