Video Tip of the Week: Throwing the Perfect Bowl and Taking it Out of Round…On Purpose!

by Lisa Bare Culp | Read Comments (4)

Today’s video comes from my good friend and instructor Lisa Bare Culp. In this video, Lisa gives a refresher course on throwing good strong bowls on the potter’s wheel, but then reminds us that round isn’t always best. Sometimes alterations to thrown forms can take a good pot to an even higher level! Use Lisa’s demonstration as a starting point and see what other interesting shapes you can come up with.
Jennifer Harnetty, editor.

Check out the video archives for more videos on
throwing and altering pots.

Lisa, Way to go. It was like a letter from home.

What a great demo. Lisa, you're a hoot. I wish you were my buddy -- we'd have a good time over coffee and goofy shaped bowls. Loved the ending, too. Professionals ruin bowls without a flinch -- doing that to a perfectly good vessel would pain me, ha! Thanks again, Steph in Wisconsin

A pleasure to watch. I throw on bats and a good way to get some out or round curve into a rim is to take the bat off the wheel and hit the edge of it, which distorts the soft rim.

I love seeing these videos! Lisa Bare Culp's offering is just great and really fun. She is so easy with the clay and so comfortable talking that I think she is talking and "demoing" just for me! The surprise humorous ending is just a hoot! Thanks, Mudmamma in Rohnert Park CA
