The summer is getting off to a good start if you are looking for things to do involving clay. From exhibitions, to studio sales, to workshops, there are lots of options out there to help inspire you in the studio and fuel your creativity.
I have gathered a few highlights for our June 2008 Month in Clay feature, but this only scratches the surface. Don’t forget to browse through the Ceramics Monthly calendar to see what else is out there! The Toe River Studio Tour will take place June 14 and 15 in the mountains of Yancey and Mitchell Counties of Western North Carolina. Sponsored by the Toe River Arts Council, the tour features more than 100 artisans who open their studio doors and welcome the public to see their workplaces. A preview exhibition of Studio Tour participant’s work is on view currently at the TRAC Center Gallery and runs through June 15. The TRAC Gallery also has maps, a picture display and information about the Tour and is located at 102 West Main Street in downtown Burnsville. For more information visit

The
Potters Council is sponsoring “
Island Clay,” an alternative firing workshop hosted by Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, from June 27-29. This red-hot workshop focuses on alternative firing methods, including naked raku, saggar, pit and salt. Island Clay provides attendees with a hands-on experience in preparing, loading and firing as demonstrated by five of the most engaging and influential artists and teachers from around the Long Island region. Presenters include Anti Liu, Hugh McElroy, Mena Romano, Jeff Shapiro, and Bill Shillalies.

New work by Dawn Holder will be on display at
Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Montana, from June 6-27. The exhibition will feature sculptural pieces and other work produced during her residency at the Center.
Holder attended the University of Georgia, receiving a BFA in ceramics, and recently earned her MFA in ceramics at The Rhode Island School of Design. She has participated in residencies at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center and the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences.
The Jersey Shore Clay National exhibition is on display through June 25th at
M. T. Burton Gallery and 19th Street Clay Studio in Surf City, New Jersey. This year’s Clay National was juried by Dan Hammett.
Paul McCoy’s “Winter Vase IV” (at left) was one of the pieces chosen for the exhibition.
McCoy was a featured artist on Ceramic Arts Daily back in October.

Ceramic artists Jim Shea and Naoko Teruya present their work in a new show, “Outside Influences,” from June 7- July 3, at
18 Hands Gallery in Houston, Texas. Shea and Teruya share an interest in creating outstanding ceramic art that reflects the quiet beauty of the natural world. They evoke a compelling chemistry in their respective approaches to the art form. "Her work is crisp and geometric, while mine is soft.” says Shea. "Yet, we are both interested in the quiet power of nature and its subtle designs.”
The teapot at left is an example of the work Teruya will be showing in this exhibition.
Ise Cultural Foundation, in New York City, is hosting an exhibition by Japanese artist, Yuko Suzuki, in its front project space through June 27.
In her work, Suzuki explores human relationships in various environments with humor and imagination, and creates a story to project such familiar moment. Yuko Suzuki is a visual artist graduated from School of Visual Art, BFA. She is living and work in New York and her work has been exhibited in galleries in Chelsea, East Village, and Brooklyn.

Also on view will be the 2008 Annual Juried Members Exhibition, juried this year by Steven Young Lee, resident artist director at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.
“Synthetic Reality,” an ambitious installation by ceramic artist Susan Beiner, is on view through August 2 at the
Arizona State University (ASU) Art Museum in Tempe, Arizona. Beiner is a faculty member of the ceramics department at ASU’s Herberger College School of Art.
This room-sized project explores the artist’s concerns of genetically altered foods, cloned animals and the hybridization of the material world. Crossing the boundaries of conventional ceramics, Beiner’s focus is making what is organic synthetic. Synthetic Reality uses encrusted walls, floors and ceiling space to surround the viewer in an imagined world of manufactured, hybridized life.
"Contemporary Turns in Clay" is on display through June 15 at the
The Grand Hand Gallery in St. Paul, Minnesota. The exhibition features work by Washington artist Sequoia Miller, Minnesota artist Jason Trebs and Wisconsin artist S.C. Rolf.

The Artisans, Designers and Artists Cooperative of Fiskars will hold the international exhibition "Tulessa Syntynyt" in the summer of 2008. “Tulessa syntynyt” means “born in fire” and the theme of the exhibition is ceramics fired in flame-kilns (gas, wood and oil). A workshop and a seminar will also be held in conjunction with the exhibition. 55 Finnish and foreign ceramic artist representing the highest skills in this area have been invited to the exhibition.
